Planting season is open

Autumn and winter is the best time to plant

A plant that goes in over autumn or winter spends the cold months putting down roots, so it is settled and ready to grow away when spring arrives.

The rain does the wateringAutumn and winter rain keeps new roots moist, so there is far less watering than planting in spring or summer.
Warm soil, resting plantsThe ground holds summer's warmth into autumn while the plant slows down above ground, so its energy goes into its roots.
Settled by springWith roots established over winter, plants grow away strongly in spring and cope far better with a dry summer.
Bare-root and root-balled seasonField-grown hedging and trees are only lifted while dormant, October to March: the widest choice, and generally better value than pot-grown.

The only times to hold off are when the ground is frozen or waterlogged.
